Scientists or politicians: who has the answer to crime? | York Humanists

Join us for this thought-provoking talk by Professor Gloria Laycock OBE, considering 'Scientists or politicians - who has the answer to crime?'
Drawing on experience of both the political and academic worlds, this talk presents a quite different picture of crime and its control than that promoted by politicians. It champions a different approach: treating crime like an engineering problem, designing it out of situations before it happens. Expect an evidence-led argument for why science should lead the conversation on crime, and why it so often doesn't.
Gloria Laycock has a BSc and PhD in psychology from UCL. She spent over thirty years at the Home Office as a psychologist and researcher before returning to UCL in 2001 to found the Jill Dando Institute of Crime Science, the first institute in the world devoted specifically to reducing crime. She went on to establish a policing institute in Abu Dhabi, direct a consortium of eight UK universities supporting the What Works Centre for Crime Reduction, and has acted as a consultant and trainer on policing matters across six continents. She was awarded an OBE in 2008 for services to crime policy.
