Changing society

What we stand for

We bring non-religious people together to campaign for a more ethical and rational society, in six broad policy areas.

Freedom of thought

Including our work on education and for a secular state

Freedom of expression

Including our work to end blasphemy laws, censorship, and on other free speech issues

Freedom of choice

Our work for individual rights and freedoms, including eliminating discrimination

Medical issues

Including our work on abortion and assisted dying

Other animals

Our work on animal welfare laws, including calls for farming reforms

Global challenges

Our humanist stance on the challenges facing all humanity

We work across the UK and internationally, including through advocacy at the UN Human Rights Council, to advance freedom of thought, choice, and expression for all.

Think for yourself, act for everyone

Humanists value free thinking and freedom of choice so everyone can live in a fair and equal society. For 130 years, we’ve spoken out for the equal dignity and humanity of every person in society. We have always been on the side of greater human equality within a framework of legal human rights for all.

Our campaigns

You can also find out more about our six current campaigns. These are areas where we work on an ongoing basis to achieve important social change.

Legal recognition for humanist marriages

So that humanist couples have the same rights as couples who have religious weddings

Action on religious schools

We want to see an end to discrimination by state faith schools and the closing down of illegal religious schools

Inclusive RE lessons

We want all young people to explore and learn about the full range of religions and non‑religious beliefs – including humanism

Persecution of humanists

We want to end international persecution of the non‑religious, including through apostasy and blasphemy laws used to silence, kill, and oppress

Safe, compassionate assisted dying laws

Giving people who are terminally ill or suffering the right to choose the circumstances of their death

Repealing blasphemy laws in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland is the last part of the UK with laws against ‘blasphemy’ – and we want them abolished
