Pride, Progress & Pushback: 47 Years of LGBT+ Humanists | Sheffield Humanists

In this conversation, Nick Baldwin, LGBT+ Coordinator at Humanists UK, will reflect on 47 years of LGBT+ Humanists and the part Humanists UK has played in advancing LGBT+ equality. Rooted in values of empathy, reason, dignity and freedom, the talk will explore why humanists have long opposed discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The discussion will also consider the growing pushback against LGBT+ rights, including the rise of religious nationalism and renewed attacks on human rights, with examples from the UK, Europe and the United States. These developments show that social progress cannot be taken for granted, even after decades of positive change.
Looking ahead, the talk will ask how Humanists UK and LGBT+ Humanists can continue to challenge intolerance, defend hard-won freedoms, and support a more equal society in which everyone can live openly and authentically.
