Join us for a welcoming and engaging discussion of our book of the month - Small Gods, by Terry Pratchett - from a humanist perspective.

This month we have been reading Small Gods, by Terry Pratchett. Sir Terry was a renowned humanist, and Small Gods is among his most satirical when it comes to religious institutions, people, and practices, and the role of religion in political life. The novel delves into the nature of belief, the power of institutions, and the essence of humanity. Throughout the book, Sir Terry's humanism, humanity and humour shines through.

Some of the humanist themes:

  • The Nature of Belief: How does Pratchett portray the relationship between gods and believers? What can this tell us about the human need for meaning and connection?
  • Power and Institutions: Analysing the critique of organised religion and its influence on society. How do institutions shape our values and ethics?
  • Individual vs. Collective Thought: The journey of Brutha, the protagonist, as a reflection on personal enlightenment and critical thinking. How does this align with humanist principles?
  • Satire and Social Commentary: Understanding Pratchett's use of humour to address serious themes. What does his satire reveal about human nature and societal norms?

Whether you're a longtime fan of Terry Pratchett or new to his work, this discussion promises to offer fresh insights and lively conversation. Bring your thoughts, questions, and an open mind as (over a coffee or beer) we delve into the world of Small Gods and its relevance to humanist philosophy.
