A book lies fanned open on a wooden table in the afternoon sunlight. The Happy Human logo and 'Leicester Humanists' in black in the top left corner of the image.

This month we are reading Go Tell It On The Mountain, a 1953 semi-autobiographical novel by James Baldwin.

What did you think of the book? Have you read any other works of Baldwin, and, as his first novel, does Go Tell It On the Mountain differ from them greatly?

Religion is very present in this book - what do you think of how Baldwin writes about it, and how it links to his own experiences?

Baldwin said of writing this first novel: "I had to deal with what hurt me most. I had to deal with my father." How do you understand his abusive father and Baldwin's exploration of his own trauma through the novel?

Whatever your thoughts and reflections, let's meet for a friendly chat and a coffee or a beer.
