We meet in the car park on the south side of Havant railway station (the 'down' side, so if arriving by train from Fratton/Portsmouth or Cosham/Fareham, cross the station footbridge to exit from the south side main entrance; car park is half a minute's walk to the left).
If driving, the south side car park itself is accessed by driving to Havant station (main entrance) itself and turning right immediately before the drop-off area. (Note: there is also a (two-storey) car park on the north ('up') side of the station. The nearby, out-of-station public footbridge across the railway lines may be closed, and a 5-6 minute walk-around would be needed to get from this north side car park to our starting point.)
If coming to Havant by bus (e.g. Stagecoach 23 or 700 from Portsmouth), get off at Havant bus station; the railway station is just 3-4 minutes walk away.
The walk is entirely flat and its total length is about 4.5 miles, but there are a couple of options for cutting that shorter for those who might wish to do so. We use the old 'Hayling Billy' track to go first to the harbourside Langstone village (two pubs), and from there, one can walk back to the starting point for a total length of about 2 miles (or even get a bus back from Langstone, for a walk of just over 1 mile). For those who wish to continue, we cross the Hayling Bridge (garage shop at far end) and continue on the old railway track to expansive views of Langstone Harbour and Portsea Island, returning the same way, BUT a second option here is to catch a Hayling bus back to Havant. For those who want to walk back for the full 4.5 miles, we return by much the same route we used out.
Most of the walk will be on a track that can be a little muddy in places, with puddles if it's been raining. Cycles also use the track so awareness of mixed-use etiquette is needed! There are several benches en route and pubs, a garage and (sometimes if the weather's good) coffee vans are available, but bringing one's own snacks and drink might be best advised. Note that the harbourside winds can be chilly.
We look forward to seeing you for a walk with much historical and wildlife (good birdwatching!) interest, and grand company as ever.
