Love books and enjoy a good conversation? Why not come along to the Portsmouth Humanists Book Group?
We meet monthly to discuss a different book each time, sharing our thoughts, reactions and different perspectives in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
The books can cover a wide range of subjects and styles, and our discussions often lead well beyond the pages of the book into questions about people, society, ideas and the world around us.
You don’t need to be an avid reader or a literary expert - whether you loved the book, disliked it, or are still wondering what on earth the author was trying to say, your views are welcome!
The emphasis is on interesting conversation and enjoying the company of fellow readers.
Come along, meet some new people, discover some interesting books and join the discussion.
You may even discover your next favourite book along the way!
This months book is "ANAXIMANDER and the nature of science" by Carlo Rovelli
Carlo Rovelli is a highly respected theoretical physicist, but he also writes very good popular science books which have the great advantages of being both scientifically correct and very readable. Anaximander was his first popular work, originally published in French in 2009, but only available in paperback in English since 2025. As suc,h it sets the scene for the many books he has written since. It is a deeply humanist work, considering both the origins and the nature of scientific thought, and how it arose at a particular time and place in contrast to the prevailing pre-scientific, religious worldviews which then dominated all human cultures.
