Philosophy in the pub | Portsmouth Humanists

Our opening question will be:

"What’s the point of philosophy?"

Is it about finding truth? Making better choices? Understanding ourselves and other people? Or something else entirely?

You’re also very welcome to bring a question of your own. It would be helpful if you could send it to us before the evening (to portsmouth@humanistbranches.uk), but spontaneous questions are welcome too.

For inspiration, you might enjoy dipping into A. C. Grayling’s The Meaning of Things: Applying Philosophy to Life. It is made up of short, accessible chapters that could help spark ideas and get the conversation flowing.

Here are a few questions to get you thinking:

* Can philosophy be practical, or is it just “thinking for thinking’s sake”?

* How do we decide what is true?

* How can we live meaningful lives without relying on certainty?
