When political extremism becomes belief | Peterborough Humanists

08 October 2026, 19:30 -- 21:30

In this talk Graham Livingstone will be discussing whether some forms of political extremism can take on the character of religious beliefs.

We will also examine whether unexamined beliefs - in the highly implausible, the scientifically impossible, and the sometimes morally indefensible - can set people on a path to extremeism.

This will be accompanied by showing extracts from the film of the Nazi's 1934 rally, which demonstrate that Hitler sought to portray himself as closer to a Messiah figure than a mere politician.

Our speaker Graham Livingstone is an amateur historian with a particular interest in Nazism and other extreme political beliefs, which stems from his childhood growing up in a dissident family in South Africa during the apartheid era. He has been an atheist since his late teens and is a regular member of Peterborough Humanists.

As usual the main talk will be followed by some friendly chat, hot beverages and delicious biscuits. We hope you can join us.
