Kumar and Vishaka Jawadekar, Lya Hall, and Yvonne Letson will share their own personal journeys: what led them to question their faith, their experiences of leaving religion, and how they navigated the changes that followed.
We will also explore some of the wider challenges faced by people who leave their faith. Lya volunteers with Faith to Faithless, which supports people who have left religion in the UK, while Yvonne works as a counsellor with people who have left high control religions and cults, and is currently doing a PhD in this field.
Leaving religion can be liberating for some people, but for others it can bring significant challenges, including changes to relationships, family, and community. Some apostates experience isolation, estrangement, or even shunning after leaving their religion.
This won't simply be an evening of speakers and presentations. There will be plenty of time for questions, discussion, and informal conversation, and we hope people will feel comfortable contributing their own thoughts and experiences if they wish.
You don't need to be a humanist to come along. Whether you have your own experience of leaving religion, know someone who has, are interested in humanism, or are simply curious and would like to understand more, you will be very welcome.
