We all want a fairer politics. But our political institutions themselves are outdated and discriminatory. The time has come for reform. Non-religious people, for example, make up over half the UK population. But this is not reflected in our laws. Part of the reason for that is that bias towards religion is baked into our institutions – into Parliament itself.

Bias towards religion in Parliament leads to bias in our politics. These biases show up in society in our casework every day – whether that’s in religious schools, compulsory worship, outdated assisted dying laws, national events, or unequal access to pastoral care.

End the MP ‘prayer advantage’
For centuries now, every meeting in the House of Commons has begun with Anglican prayers. Today is no different. But because MPs still reserve their seats using a ‘prayer card,’ during the most important debates, only backbench MPs who join for prayer get the chance to take part in the debate. It is sad but true.

We don’t think any religion should have a special role in Parliament or be treated as inherently better or worse than any other religion or any non-religious belief. But we still see bias in 26 bishops in the House of Lords, the exclusive provision of Anglican chaplaincy to MPs, the prayer card system, and special rules that say you have to shut up when a bishop stands to speak.

In the Welsh Parliament, by contrast, there are no bishops, no ‘prayers’, and no religious bias. Welsh politicians who wish to speak to someone have the choice of a humanist or an Anglican or a Catholic or a Muslim – it’s up to them!
