Baroness Thornton

Baroness Thornton was made a patron of Humanists UK for her contribution to advancing human rights, equality, and justice.

Glenys Thornton was born in 1952. She graduated from the London School of Economics, was Political Secretary of the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society from 1981, and joined the public affairs team of the Co-operative Wholesale Society upon their merger in 1985 and worked there until 1992. She was General Secretary of the Fabian Society from 1993 to 1996.

In 1998 she was made a Life peer as Baroness Thornton of Manningham in the County of West Yorkshire. In the Lords she has been a Government Whip (2008-10); Government Spokesperson for Work and Pensions (2008), Equality (2008), Health (2008, 2009-10); Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health 2010; Opposition Spokesperson for: Health (2010-12(, Work and Pensions (2010), Equalities Office (from 2010).
