In conversation with Mark Williamson

In this series, Humanists UK Chief Executive Andrew Copson hosts unscripted, one-on-one discussions over the course of 60 minutes with philosophers, scientists, campaigners, entertainers, and historians.
Dr Mark Williamson is co-founder and Director of Action for Happiness, the charity and mass movement he has led since it began in 2010. Founded with Richard Layard, Anthony Seldon, and Geoff Mulgan on the premise that societies improve when happiness is treated as a shared goal rather than a private matter, it now has more than 780,000 members in over 100 countries. Its work rests on the evidence-based Ten Keys to Happier Living, delivered through action calendars and an app used by millions of people, alongside the eight-week Exploring What Matters course. Before 2010 Mark worked in engineering and business, latterly as Director of Innovation at the Carbon Trust.
Make Life Happier: 23 Practical Ways to Feel Better, Find Meaning and Make a Difference, published in April 2026, distils that approach into a single book. Drawing on 15 years of work with leading wellbeing researchers, it sets out 23 'happiness experiments' to try rather than one prescription to follow. The first half deals with self-care – mindfulness, optimism, self-acceptance, and purpose – and the second turns outwards to listening, vulnerability, forgiveness, and community.
