A statue of Rhodri Morgan (1939-2017) was unveiled in Cardiff Bay today. Wales Humanists were represented at the unveiling ceremony and have welcomed it as a fitting tribute to one of Wales’ most influential political figures.
Rhodri Morgan served as First Minister of Wales from 2000 to 2009, making him the longest-serving holder of the office. Widely regarded as one of the principal architects of Welsh devolution, he played a defining role in establishing the Senedd and championed a distinctly Welsh approach to public services and social justice.
Beyond his political achievements, Rhodri was also a committed humanist. As a patron of Humanists UK, he was a passionate advocate for equality, reason, and compassion in public life. His humanist beliefs were reflected in his commitment to creating a fairer, more inclusive Wales where everyone could flourish regardless of their religion or belief.

Following his death in 2017, Rhodri’s family chose a humanist funeral held at the Senedd, led by Humanists UK celebrant and former Assembly Member Lorraine Barrett. The ceremony became the first public national humanist funeral in UK history, attended by political leaders, family, friends and members of the public, and watched by thousands more across Wales.
It demonstrated both Rhodri’s lifelong commitment to humanist values and the growing place of non-religious people in Welsh civic life.

Kathy Riddick, Campaigns and Policy Manager for Wales Humanists, said:
‘Rhodri Morgan was a remarkable leader whose vision helped shape modern Wales. His belief in fairness, equality and public service continues to inspire people across political and religious divides.
‘As a patron of Humanists UK, Rhodri was also a proud humanist. He understood that public institutions should serve everyone equally, regardless of their religion or belief, and he championed an inclusive Wales where diversity was recognised as a strength.’
