Bangor Humanists Film Screening and Q&A : "London Recruits: The Secret War Against Apartheid"

04 March 2026, 19:00 -- 21:30

Winner of Best Documentary at the Jo'burg Film Festival 2024, Comrade Tambo's London Recruits (12A) sheds light on a daring internationalist mission that remained a secret for decades.

The Mission: By the late 1960s, the ANC was banned and its leaders imprisoned or exiled. From London, Oliver Tambo devised a dangerous plan to reignite the hope of liberation within South Africa.

The Recruits: Recruited by Ronnie Kasrils, a group of young, white British citizens—posing as tourists, honeymooners, and business travellers—smuggled leaflets and tape recordings into the heart of the apartheid police state.

The Risk: These ordinary people risked imprisonment and torture to execute high-stakes "leaflet bomb" operations, proving to the world that the resistance was still alive.

The Event: This screening includes an exclusive Q&A session with the film’s director, Gordon Main, and two of the original London Recruits, offering a rare opportunity to hear firsthand accounts of their covert operations.

Donations: While this event is free to attend, we will be asking for donations to help cover the room, flight costs and travel expenses required to bring our special guests to Northern Ireland. Your support is greatly appreciated.
