Humanists UK is deeply saddened to hear of the death of its patron Baroness Kinnock, a dedicated advocate for social justice and a stalwart supporter of humanist causes both in the UK and internationally.
Born 1944 in Wales, Glenys Kinnock studied Education and History at Cardiff University where she met her husband and future Labour Party leader, Neil Kinnock. She taught for 30 years and remained politically active in her own right, campaigning on issues such as nuclear disarmament and women’s rights. After her husband’s resignation as Labour Party Leader in 1992, she transitioned seamlessly into the world of politics, becoming a Member of the European Parliament for Wales from 1994 to 2009. She was awarded a life peerage when she joined the government in 2009 under Gordon Brown and throughout her tenure in the House of Lords she served as a minister, focusing on her deep-seated passions for Europe, Africa, and the United Nations. In 2010, she led the Government’s work to tackle violence against women overseas.
Glenys was a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group (APPHG). In 2016, she signed an open letter in The Times newspaper calling on then Prime Minister, Theresa May, to drop proposals that would allow all new and existing ‘faith’ schools in England to religiously select 100% of their places.
She is survived by her husband Lord Neil Kinnock and two children, including serving Labour MP Stephen Kinnock, both members of the APPHG.
