Janet Ellis stars in new film: All we have is each other

30 June, 2026

Humanists UK has launched a new film featuring our President, Janet Ellis, inviting people to discover how close they may already be to humanism.

The short film, All we have is each other, sees Janet reflect on the values that shape her humanist outlook: making sense of the world through reason and evidence, finding meaning in the one life we have, and trying to live with kindness, empathy, and concern for others.

At a time when more and more people in the UK describe themselves as non-religious, the film carries a simple message: many people already live by humanist values, even if they have never used the word ‘humanist’ to describe themselves.

In the film, Janet speaks personally about what humanism means to her, and why Humanists UK matters. She encourages people who share humanist values to join the charity’s growing movement for a kinder, more rational, and more inclusive society.

Humanists UK President Janet Ellis commented:

‘It was good to put what I think into words and hopefully get the message across. Humanism matters a great deal to me, and I’m always meeting people who agree with the sentiments and support the goals, but haven’t joined us officially – yet.

‘We had a great time putting this together. Just out of shot is my dog, Angela, who provided support and also needed constant attention. I don’t want that – truly – but I would like many more people to join us!’

Humanists UK Chief Executive Andrew Copson commented:

‘Janet captures something very important in this film: that humanism is not abstract or remote. It is a way of thinking and living that millions of people already recognise in themselves – being curious, compassionate, and committed to making the most of the one life we have.

‘We hope this film will help more people realise that there is a name for the values they already hold, and a community they can be part of. If you believe in thinking for yourself and acting for everyone, you may be closer to humanism than you think.’

The new film forms part of Humanists UK’s wider work to introduce humanism to the growing number of people in the UK who are non-religious, and to invite those who share humanist values to join and support its work.
