Humanists UK mourns Jonathan Stopes-Roe (1951-2025)

28 May, 2025

Humanists UK is saddened to hear of the death of Jonathan Stopes-Roe, a dedicated humanist and long-serving activist, who died on 24 January 2025 at the age of 74.

Jonathan Stopes-Roe was born on 3 January 1951, the son of Dr Harry Stopes-Roe (1924-2014), a former Vice President of Humanists UK. He was grandson of birth control pioneer Marie Stopes (1880-1958) as well as the renowned engineer Sir Barnes Wallis (1887-1979), best known for inventing the bouncing bomb used by the Royal Air Force in Operation Chastise during World War II.

A senior civil servant at the Department of Health by profession, Jonathan dedicated a significant amount of his personal time and expertise to the humanist movement over five decades. While he maintained a distinct profile from that of his public-facing father, his contributions behind the scenes were invaluable.

Jonathan became involved with Humanists UK (then the British Humanist Association) in the late 1970s attending its annual conferences where he met his wife Christine. In the early 80s, he began to chair conference sessions for which was noted for his adept handling of debates, demonstrating skill and courtesy while making sure discussions remained focused.

A testament to his commitment, Jonathan spent nearly two years in the early 1980s developing the code for the BHA’s first membership database – a monumental undertaking for an amateur. He served for many years on the executive committee of Humanists UK.

Jonathan later became involved with the Rationalist Press Association (RPA), where he served as chair for several years. Jonathan was an Honorary Associate of the Rationalist Association, which merged with Humanists UK in early 2025.

Jonathan is survived by his wife Christine, daughters Emily and Lucy, and grandsons Oli, Benji, Toby, and Rory. He also served as a trustee of the Barnes Wallis Foundation, preserving his grandfather’s legacy.

Andrew Copson, Chief Executive of Humanists UK, commented:

‘Jonathan’s dedication and practical contributions were foundational to the growth and development of Humanists UK. His commitment to the humanist cause, mostly out of the spotlight, enhanced our ability to connect with and serve our members and we’re deeply grateful for his tireless work.’
