Applications are now being accepted for the Blackham Fellowships, which are administered by the British Humanist Association, the Conway Hall Ethical Society, and the Rationalist Association. The Fellowships consist of a grant of £5,000 for the purpose of transforming research in a field covered by the Blackham Fellowship into a publishable form as a book.
Applications are invited from those who are conducting research (within the last five years) in the fields of Philosophy, History, Religious Studies, Social Sciences or Literature and on a subject related to the study of non-religious ethics, Humanism, or Rationalism, in Britain.
Additional benefits of the fellowship are the option of life membership of both the British Humanist Association and Conway Hall Ethical Society, and a life subscription to New Humanist – the magazine of the Rationalist Association. Fellows are also encouraged to perform a month’s internship at either the British Humanist Association, Conway Hall Ethical Society or New Humanist magazine, for which expenses are provided.
As part of the terms of the fellowship, fellows are required to deliver one public lecture at Conway Hall on an aspect of their research and prepare one article of 2000 words which may be published in New Humanist. The Blackham Fellowship will last 12 months. At the end of the fellowship, a manuscript of the completed work must be submitted to the Blackham Fellowship committee. If it is not, the Blackham Fellowship committee reserve the right to seek reimbursement of the grant. Payment of the grant will be in the form of £2,500 at the commencement of the first month of the fellowship and £2,500 at the commencement of the sixth month.
