BHA meets Justice Minister

12 October, 2010

Bishops in the Lords, a Bill of Rights, Sharia law and marriage law were all topics discussed at a meeting between the BHA and the Justice Minister this morning. BHA Chief Executive Andrew Copson and Head of Public Affairs Naomi Phillips were invited to meet with Lord McNally, the Minister for Justice at his office in Petty France, London, to discuss mutual matters of interest.

Commenting on the meeting, Andrew Copson said, ‘The BHA has worked as a stakeholder with the Ministry of Justice for many years on a variety of issues, and we were delighted to be meeting with the new Minister and his officials in order to further that relationship. The Minister had a good understanding of our policies on issues such as Bishops in the Lords, and addressed each with consideration and some detail. On Bishops, we were pleased to hear that the government is already considering their status in a reformed House of Lords.’

‘The Minister welcomed our contribution to matters that fall within his portfolio, such as religious and domestic law and constitutional reform, and encouraged us to work closely with his Department as well as the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group in order to have our perspective heard and included in central policy making.’
