The BHA has today welcomed a statement from the Government Equality Office following the completion of the Equality Bill’s third reading in the House of Lords. The BHA has been undertaking considerable work on the Bill along with other equalities organisations, and welcomes the commitment to put equality ‘firmly at the centre of Government.’
BHA Chief Executive Andrew Copson said, ‘We may have reservations about several specific aspects of the Bill and the way it will impact on the rights of non-religious people, but we recognise the huge amount of work that it has taken to get it thus far. We welcome the commitment by government to put equality at the top of the agenda.
‘In a free and open society, equality and anti-discrimination legislation has an important role to play and we will continue to represent non-religious people in these debates and support other equality organisations in their work.’
