The British Humanist Association (BHA) has today responded to a BBC Trust consultation about BBC1, BBC2 and BBC4. The consultation paper asked how well the services were living up to their service licences and the BBC’s public purposes.
The BHA response highlighted the fact that the BBC has a responsibility under its own service licences, public purposes and under national legislation to reflect the diversity of UK society.
Campaigns Officer, Pepper Harow, commented, “By failing to include Humanist programming in their output and by ignoring the fact that non-religious beliefs should be treated equally to religious beliefs the BBC is failing its service users. By giving religious broadcasting a privileged status in their output, the BBC is ignoring the large percentage of the population who are non-religious. In our response, we have asked the BBC to change their service licences to fully reflect the diversity of belief in the UK.”
