BHA urges Prime Minister to recognise contribution of humanists

12 August, 2009

The British Humanist Association (BHA) has written to the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in response to an interview he gave on Premier Christian Radio, where he failed to recognise the contribution of humanists and humanist values to our society, while he praised the role of religion.

Hanne Stinson, BHA Chief Executive, said, ‘All too often humanists are excluded from discussions of values and social contributions to society. It is undeniable that Christianity has had a huge influence historically on our culture, but it is far more plausible today to say that the prevailing values in society are humanist than Christian.’

‘It is entirely welcome that the churches have by reinterpretation or different selection of scriptures largely come to terms with these changes, but to claim that today’s tolerant and humanist values are actually those of traditional Christianity is not supportable.’
