The British Humanist Association (BHA) has welcomed comments from the head of a Catholic organisation, who has expressed his support for gay and unmarried parents. Terry Prendergast, Chief Executive of Marriage Care, criticised the denigration by the Vatican’s teachings of such families.
Naomi Phillips, BHA Public Affairs Officer, said, ‘How refreshing for a leading Catholic to express such strong support for all families that support and nurture children in stable and loving relationships and not just those which fit the traditional heterosexual marriage model.’
‘Families exist for mutual support, companionship, and the welfare of children. We all need close and loving relationships, and that the details of family arrangements are not so important as long as the adults are making responsible choices and everyone involved is reasonably happy.’
