Local humanist groups, affiliated to the British Humanist Association (BHA), are learning from and supporting humanist groups and projects internationally.
As part of the twinning programme developed by the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU), members of the Dorset Humanists have been in contact with and visited the International School of Humanitarian Thoughts and Practice in India, which held a recent conference entitled ‘Humanism as the Solution to Contemporary Problems of Humanity’.
The Dorset Humanists provide friendship and ‘twinning’ support to the School, which founded ‘Kids’ Kingdom’, an orphanage which looks after children who were orphaned after the devastating earthquake in Kashmir . David Warden from the Dorsetgroup, who visited the School, said, ‘It’s good for Western Humanists to visit Humanists in the developing world because it gives you an outside perspective on our materialistic culture.’
Two British humanist groups are helping keep Humanism alive and well in Uganda . The North East Humanists have given two grants to the Isaac Newton School , which provide for the uniforms and tuition of 24 disadvantaged students for a whole year and the South Cheshire and North Staffordshire Humanists have funded an account at a bookshop, to assist the school in buying materials and books.
