What is Humanism, who are we, and what do we do?
Humanists…
- Think for themselves about what’s right and wrong, based on reason and respect for others.
- Find meaning, beauty, and joy in the one life we have, without the need for an afterlife.
- Look to science instead of religion as the best way to discover and understand the world.
- Believe empathy and compassion can make the world a better place for everyone.
Humanists UK…
Works on behalf of non-religious people who seek to live ethical lives on the basis of reason and humanity. We promote Humanism, a secular state, and equal treatment of everyone regardless of religion or belief.
We campaign for…
a wide range of issues, from trying to stop the segregation and indoctrination of children in faith schools, and removing the unelected bishops from the House of Lords, to freedom of speech, equal marriage, and much more.

Humanist Ceremonies:
Weddings: Wouldn’t it be great to start your married life with a ceremony that really means something? To tell your friends and family what your relationship means to you, and why you are choosing to get married? Many people who aren’t religious are looking for a wedding that is more flexible and personal than a civil or register office ceremony, with the opportunity to marry where you want, when you want, and how you want. This is where our wedding ceremonies come in.
Funerals: Humanist funerals are a personal and fitting way to say goodbye to those who have lived without religion. Humanist funerals bring people together to express sadness at the loss but also to celebrate the life lived. They focus sincerely and affectionately on the person who has died, paying tribute to the way they lived their life, and to the connections they made and left behind.
Baby Namings: Many parents want a naming ceremony to celebrate the new life of their child, but without labelling the child any particular faith. Humanist namings offer a way to have the celebration without the religious aspects of a Christening, Baptism, or other religious naming ceremony.
