Phil Walder, a Humanist Ceremonies celebrant, asks fellow humanists if we should eat meat.

Phil Walder has conducted humanist ceremonies (baby namings, weddings, and funerals) for many years. He has given talks on the ethics of eating meat and wonders if people who describe themselves as humanists should eat meat. In an updated discussion, Chichester Humanists has invited Phil to ponder the issue with fellow Humanists.

Should we be vegetarians or vegans? Or is it enough to just reduce our meat consumption? What is the moral reasoning for becoming vegetarian or vegan: animal rights, animal welfare, environmentalism? Is it reasonable to expect humanists who have been raised in meat-eating families to switch to a vegan diet? Should we expect humanists to be more moral than others on this and other issues?

What are your thoughts? Come along and join the conversation.
