Rest, resistance, and radicalism: humanist history in Cornwall | Cornwall Humanists

Join us on Zoom to explore the compelling history of humanism in Cornwall, home to radical freethinkers and humanist luminaries for centuries.
From Newlyn-born chartist William Lovett, through the St. Ives holidays of a young Virginia Woolf, to the formation of the Falmouth Humanist Group and beyond, hear the unsung story of Cornwall’s humanists – and how the county shaped them.
Maddy will cover the inspiring legacy of Dora Russell, a lifelong campaigner for human rights and peace, who made her home in Porthcurno; the efforts of Perranporth schoolgirl Abigail Wright, who took on the Girl Guides’ religious requirements; and the early 1990s campaign for humanist representation on Cornwall’s Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education (SACRE).
Be inspired, bring your own memories, and be part of continuing this rich humanist tradition today.
