Joseph Priestley - Yorkshireman, Chemist, Philosopher, and Revolutionary? | Sheffield Humanists

20 April 2026, 19:30 -- 21:30

Discover the remarkable life and legacy of Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) — chemist and radical Unitarian freethinker.

This engaging talk will trace Priestley’s journey from his Yorkshire roots to his influential roles in science, education, religious thought, and political reform. As a true polymath, Priestley’s story is one of intellectual curiosity, dissent, and a relentless pursuit of reason.

We will explore Priestley’s groundbreaking scientific achievements, including his discovery of oxygen and his practical innovations like carbonated water. We will also delve into his radical religious views, but also his advocacy for rational dissent, and his attempts to align and update his Christian beliefs based on new scientific discoveries.

What can we learn from Priestley’s life and legacy?

Join us for a homage to dissent, reason, and the power of questioning received wisdom.
