Introduction to Apostasy Awareness course (online) | Faith to Faithless
People who leave high-control religious groups or have experienced religious abuse are often misunderstood when accessing services. We offer a short introduction to the issues they may face and how best to support them.
'Apostates' as the ex-religious are sometimes called, may have experienced a wide range of hardships and abuses as a result of leaving religion. These can include mental health issues, homelessness, loss of employment, poverty, threats to life, exclusion, and extreme isolation.
This one-hour online course, with an additional 30 minutes for questions and answers at the end, has been designed to introduce you to the topic of leaving controlling religions and how this impacts people, and how best to support them. We deliver this course to anyone who works in a position where they are supporting individuals who may have had this experience. This course is suitable for those who may work for a charitable group, an educational institute, in healthcare, social services, working in therapy, the police, and others.
We are proud to have been awarded OCN London Endorsement, a nationally recognised endorsement for organisations providing the highest standards of training and learning opportunities. Our trainer is educated to master's degree level in social psychology (at the University of Kent, and Tilburg University NL), has conducted research on the relationship between religious fundamentalism and ostracism, has advised government policy makers and the United Nations Human Rights Committee on issues of apostasy and abuse, and has over 15 years experience of supporting those leaving high-control religions.
We also deliver a more in-depth training course which is a bespoke half-day or full-day on-site training course to whole teams. If this is something you would be interested in, or if you have further questions, then do let us know.
