Humanist Heritage | Nottingham Humanists (official launch)

28 January 2025, 18:30 -- 22:00

Please join us for a fascinating talk from Humanists UK’s Heritage Coordinator, and to celebrate our official launch.

Maddy Goodall coordinates the Humanist Heritage Project, which aims to bring to life an often overlooked but historically influential aspect of our heritage – humanism and the impact it has had locally and nationally on art, literature, and social, political, and ethical culture throughout UK history.

We will learn more about Nottingham's history of humanist activism, including through the story of the 19th-century radical and Nottingham native Susannah Wright. Susannah was an ardent defender of free press and free discussion, who accepted ridicule and imprisonment in the name of upholding these fundamental rights. She defended freethought bookshops from state persecution and established her own in the city.

In addition to our main talk, this will be a celebration of the launch of our new Local Group and a chance to meet other like-minded folks, or simply join the local community in insightful conversation on the subject.

The event starts at 19:00 sharp, so it’s well worth joining us at 18:30. If you'd like to, feel free to make use of the fully-functional bar facilities or order some food to enjoy while you're here.
