Community, Chaos, and Change – what can we learn from Extinction Rebellion? | York Humanists
Extinction Rebellion may be best known for its disruptive protests, and for using minor disorder to drive awareness of the threat of climate collapse. But behind the scenes, disorder is traded for order, as the organisation employs a distinctive horizontal structure and theory of change drawn from other successful non-violent movements.
For this talk, Extinction Rebellion Harrogate organiser Victoria Wild will speak on how the communities within Extinction Rebellion are key to its ability to perform at scale, providing support, ideas and training. By their very nature, she will argue, they 'present a challenge to the destructive economic model which is fuelling climate change'.
What lessons can we take from ER's operating model in the humanist movement, as we build up our local organisation and work to take advantage of local opportunities to champion ideas for a better society?
Victoria Wild works in fair trade and has been involved in the local green movement for the last few years, including setting up the XR group in Harrogate.
