Humanist volunteers can contribute to high-quality RE taught in schools by participating in local education committees across England and Wales — known as SACREs or SACs.
What is a SACRE or SAC?
In England, SACRE stands for Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education. In Wales, the SAC is the Standing Advisory Council on Religion, Values and Ethics. Every local authority has one. These committees advise on what pupils should learn in religious education lessons.
Too often, there’s no one on them to represent a humanist viewpoint — and as a result, many young people miss out on learning about humanism.
You can help change that. By volunteering with your local SACRE or SAC, you’ll help make sure that young people have the opportunity to learn about non-religious approaches to life.

If we’re currently looking for a rep in your area and you’d like to help, please get in touch via sacres@humanism.org.uk. Even if your local committee already has someone, there may be a vacancy in a nearby area — especially in cities. Some SACREs are also willing to consider a volunteer who lives just outside their boundaries.
