We are horrified by the dreadful attack in Manchester today, which has claimed lives and left others in a serious condition. Our deepest thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the wider community — especially on this day of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Violence, prejudice, and hatred directed at people because of their identity is abhorrent. No one should ever face fear or violence for their identity or beliefs. Everyone in our country must be safe to practise their religion or live in accordance with their worldview in peace.
As the facts continue to emerge, it is vital that our political leaders, communities, and institutions stand together against hatred in all its forms.
At Humanists UK, we reaffirm our commitment to a society where people of all backgrounds – religious and non-religious alike – can live freely and equally, without intimidation, persecution, or fear.
We will always defend the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and belief — including the right to practise a religion and to change belief. Today’s attack is a stark reminder of why these rights matter. They are not abstract principles but the foundation of a peaceful society in which people can live authentically and safely. Their opposite is division and death.
