The Government finally said it will recognise humanist marriages in England and Wales. But instead of acting now, it’s kicked the issue further down the road, tying it to a broader and potentially controversial review of marriage law. That means even more delay.

If the Government is serious about legalising humanist marriages, it should do it now – not after more dithering. We need you to write to your MP today to tell the UK Government to use its powers to bring about recognition without a Bill , and give humanist couples the right to have legally recognised humanist marriages now.

While we have provided a template, we strongly encourage you to personalise your email. We know that MPs are more likely to take notice of personalised emails and queries. Even a few added sentences can make a real difference.

Tips for personalising your message
  • If you are planning to have – or have had – a humanist wedding – please explain this, and the difference legal recognition would make or would have made to your special day.

  • If you have attended a humanist wedding – please describe what the experience was like, and how it differed to other weddings you have been to.

  • If you conduct humanist wedding ceremonies – emphasise this, and identify how your work makes these ceremonies distinct and special.

Please keep us informed of any responses from your MPs by emailing campaigns@humanists.uk. Your message today plays a vital role in our campaign to secure legal recognition for humanist marriages in England and Wales.
