Life is precious. But when you can only feel pain, and your suffering cannot be eased, shouldn’t you be able to choose a dignified and comfortable end? We believe it’s a fundamental matter of individual choice and dignity.
Adults who are suffering intolerably from an incurable physical condition deserve the right to choose a peaceful death on their own terms.
Creating a compassionate assisted dying law would introduce safeguards where there are currently none. Parliament cannot ignore people who are dying in pain every day.
Prime Minister: bring forward a Government Bill to legalise assisted dying
We, the undersigned, call on the Prime Minister to introduce a Government Bill that would legalise assisted dying for adults who are intolerably suffering from an incurable physical condition, with strong safeguards. MPs should be able to then vote on the Bill as a matter of conscience.
Under the current law, people who want control over the end of their lives have only bad options. They can endure suffering they do not want, travel abroad if they can afford it and are well enough, or act alone and in secret. Their families can face police investigation simply for helping them.
Most of the public supports a compassionate assisted dying law, and working laws with strong safeguards already exist in many countries and in our neighbours, the Isle of Man and Jersey.
We ask the Government to take responsibility and bring forward that Bill.
