Bishops’ automatic seats in the House of Lords are undemocratic and a threat to a tolerant and diverse UK – get them out now!
The UK is alone among democratic sovereign states in having clerics vote on our laws – a hangover from 14th century medieval England. And it simply doesn’t reflect the country we are today.
As the Church of England’s recent opposition to same-sex marriages and its leaders’ comments about abortion and assisted dying have shown, a big values gap has opened up between the established church and an increasingly non-religious, religiously diverse, and tolerant country.
This antiquated setup has a negative influence on the quality and character of British politics. The only two sovereign states in the world to award clerics of the established religion votes in their legislatures are the UK and the Islamic Republic of Iran (a totalitarian theocracy).
The time is well and truly here to insist that bishops are removed from the House of Lords. Religious privilege in Parliament needs to end NOW.
