Every pupil should learn about all religions and worldviews, so they can grow up with knowledge, tolerance, and freedom of thought.

A Reform councillor recently argued that children should receive ‘Christian-only’ Religious Education – even claiming that teaching about different beliefs would amount to ‘brainwashing’.
The truth is the opposite. Limiting RE to one faith would deny children the chance to learn about the diverse world they live in. That is indoctrination, not education.
Inclusive RE gives pupils the knowledge to understand different religions and non-religious worldviews, the ability to think critically, and the tools to live together in a tolerant society. That is what education should be about.
Most people in the UK want children to grow up informed and free to make their own choices. We must make sure that attitudes like the one expressed by this councillor never shape the future of our schools.
Humanists UK campaigns for reform of RE because we believe that all pupils in all types of school should have the opportunity to consider philosophical and fundamental questions, and that in an open society we should learn about each other’s beliefs, including humanism.
