John Birt’s career was in broadcasting, initially in current affairs programmes, progressing to be Director-General of the BBC. He was Strategy Adviser to Tony Blair as Prime Minister from 2000 to 2005; and has since been a Director of many companies, including Chair of PayPal Europe. He is a crossbench Member of the House of Lords.
