Mormonism: The Invention of a Religion | York Humanists

Registration is closed for this event
19 November 2025, 19:00 -- 20:30

Join us for a fascinating talk by John Adams, retired academic and long-time humanist, as he explores the remarkable origins of Mormonism – a religion that began in a small 19th-century New York town and rapidly grew into a global belief.

In 'Mormonism – The Invention of a Religion', John unpacks the story of Joseph Smith, the founding father of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the factors that led to its explosive growth. He’ll also reflect on what the rise of Mormonism can teach us about the development and spread of all religions, past and present.

John is a past Chair of North Yorkshire Humanists and former Treasurer of Humanists UK, bringing decades of insight into the intersection of religion, belief, and secular thought.

All are welcome at our friendly York Humanists events – humanists, the curious, and the questioning alike.
