Book Club | Leeds Humanists

27 November 2024, 17:00 -- 19:00

Our next in-person meeting will discuss a member’s choice: Marcus Aurelius’s 'Meditations'. Join in search of a humanist perspective within, and on, this classic work of stoic philosophy.

As a Stoic philosopher, Aurelius grapples with questions of purpose, integrity, and the human condition in a way that resonates with modern humanist ideals. Whether you're new to Stoicism or an experienced reader, join us to discuss how these reflections can inspire and enrich a humanist approach to life today.

The book was chosen by our book club member, Adrian at a previous meeting. Thank you, Adrian, for selecting this profound and timeless work and providing such an insightful summary:

‘In his Meditations, the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (121-180 CE) wrote notes to himself about how to live a good life. It is clear from the book that he suffered from impatience and an irascible temper. Still, his purpose is to overcome those characteristics to treat people with understanding, patience, and respect and to devote his life, a fleeting instant compared with the vastness of time before and after it, to work to the best of his ability for the common good.  From Stoic philosophy, he derives ideas such as Nature being directed by reason and benevolence and that nobody does wrong intentionally but only through ignorance.  The book has guided and inspired thinkers and leaders for centuries.  I would not call Marcus a humanist, but his ideas have influenced both humanist and religious thinking and are still important and highly relevant.’

We look forward to a stimulating discussion and exploring Marcus Aurelius' wisdom together.
