Humanists UK is saddened to learn of the death of its patron: conservationist, author of Annie’s Box, and great great grandson of Charles Darwin, Randal Keynes OBE.
Keynes played a key role in cementing Charles Darwin’s legacy as a humanist. In the 1990s, in a chest of drawers bequeathed by his grandmother, Randal Keynes discovered the writing case of Charles Darwin’s beloved eldest daughter Annie, who died at the age of 10. He also found the notes Darwin kept throughout Annie’s illness, the eulogy he delivered at her funeral, and provocative new insights into Darwin ’s views on nature, evolution, and the human condition. The book that resulted, Annie’s Box, provided readers with a unique insight into the personal influences behind Darwin’s groundbreaking work, and a humane, warm portrait of the man who changed our view on human nature forever. The book was published in 2001 to critical acclaim and in 2009 was adapted into the feature film Creation.
As well as a relative of Darwin, Keynes was also the great nephew of the 20th century economist John Maynard Keynes, who brought a humanist focus to the economic challenges of the Great Depression.
Reflecting on his role as a patron of Humanists UK, Randal said:
‘I realise that what I found out and explained in my book on Darwin about his views on religion and the natural origins of human morality was a manifesto for Darwin as a humanist. I am so glad to be joining this company in which I feel Darwin would have felt himself to be among his kind.’
Randal was passionate about conservation and science education. He served on the board of the Charles Darwin Foundation and its Research Station and he was Chairman of the Charles Darwin Trust. In 2012 the University of Birmingham conferred on him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his contribution to the history of science.
Commenting on Randal’s death, Chief Executive Andrew Copson said:
‘Randal’s life was a testament to the values he held dear: a commitment to truth, a passion for knowledge, and a profound respect for the natural world. His work not only enriched our understanding of Charles Darwin but also embodied the humanist principles of empathy, reason, and a dedication to the betterment of our species.
