Religion in schools with 'Parents for Inclusive Education' | Bangor Humanists

September 3rd, 2024 19:00   --   21:00

As schools regroup for the new year, Parents for Inclusive Education (PFIE) will explain their shocking findings on religious practices in primary schools, and discuss what we can do to help them fight for more inclusive education for everyone.

Whether you are a parent, a grandparent, or neither, PFIE will let us know how we can get involved and help them achieve their goal of fostering inclusivity and ensuring that every child and family feels a sense of belonging and acceptance within our schools. In this fascinating talk, PFIE will present the findings from their recent report into RE in primary schools.

Did you know:

  • It is a legal requirement for all schools to provide daily acts of collective worship?
  • In primary schools the statutory core RE syllabus focuses exclusively on Christianity and features no other religions or worldviews?
  • Schools are legally obliged to give ministers of religion and other suitable persons access to pupils to deliver RE?
  • Inspection of RE is conducted by churches and not the Department of Education?
  • The proportion of people in Northern Ireland who see themselves as non-religious continues to grow, especially here in Ards & North Down where it is over 32%?

Parents for Inclusive Education is a grassroots campaign group of primary school parents in Northern Ireland, advocating for a more inclusive education system that respects and includes all children regardless of their faith or belief. Northern Ireland Humanists has supported Parents for Inclusive Education since its inception in 2023.
