As things currently stand, 26 Church of England bishops have the automatic right to sit, speak, and vote in our Parliament. If you agree that it’s fundamentally wrong for any special interest group to be afforded such privilege over our laws, please make a contribution today.
The automatic appointment of 26 bishops in the House of Lords is:
UNJUSTIFIED
For no justifiable reason (other than tradition) 26 Church of England bishops have the automatic right to sit, speak, and vote in our Parliament.
UNDEMOCRATIC
Put simply, bishops vote on laws that affect every single one of us, without having been elected to do so. This is inherently undemocratic.
UNFAIR
Over half of the British population is not religious, and the other half comprises a wide range of different religions and beliefs. Church of England bishops in the House of Lords do not speak and vote on behalf of the non-religious majority in this country. And it’s just not fair.
UNPOPULAR
We’ve been building a case for House of Lords reform for many years. Armed with this compelling new research, we’re ready to push this work even further. Your contribution today can help us do just that. With your help, we can and will create fairer and more equal system for everyone – in politics, and beyond. Thank you.
