Ian Dunt to chair ‘New Humanist’ Editorial Board

27 May, 2025

Acclaimed political journalist and author Ian Dunt has been appointed as the Chair of the newly established Editorial Board for New Humanist magazine, following its merger with Humanists UK earlier this year.

New Humanist, now in its 140th year of publication, became part of Humanists UK on 1 January this year in a merger that will boost readership for the magazine to more than 130,000 and secure the future of its rich history of critical thinking and rational inquiry. The magazine, whose past contributors and subscribers include Bertrand Russell, E M Forster, Albert Einstein, Vera Brittain, and Margaret Knight, provides a vital platform for exploring pressing political, social, cultural, economic, and scientific issues from a humanist perspective.

The new Editorial Board is charged with upholding the magazine’s values and mission, and guiding its future direction. Their collective expertise will contribute to maintaining the high standards of accuracy, fairness, and intellectual rigour that New Humanist is known for and the Board will also advise on emerging trends and potential contributors, helping to expand the magazine’s reach to a wider audience.

Ian Dunt is a prominent voice in British political journalism, known for his incisive commentary and bestselling books including Brexit: What the Hell Happens Now?, How To Be A Liberal, and How Westminster Works … and Why It Doesn’t. His experience as a columnist for the i and former Editor of politics.co.uk, alongside his regular appearances as a political commentator on TV, radio, and podcasts, have made him a popular  national commentator for many liberals and humanists.

Humanists UK Chief Executive Andrew Copson commented:

‘We’re thrilled to welcome Ian Dunt as the inaugural Chair of the New Humanist Editorial Board. His commitment to rational discourse and his deep humanist instincts align perfectly with the magazine’s ethos. This Board will be instrumental in safeguarding New Humanist’s legacy and helping it to thrive into the future, working closely with Editor Niki Seth-Smith and her brilliant team to drive the magazine forward.’

Newly appointed Chair of the New Humanist Editorial Board Ian Dunt said:

‘For decades, New Humanist has been a crucial voice for reason and open debate, cutting through the noise with clear, evidence-based thinking.’

‘In an age increasingly dominated by misinformation and polarised views, that kind of incisive, rational inquiry is more vital than ever. I’m looking forward to helping guide the magazine in its next chapter, ensuring it continues to challenge, inform, and inspire readers who believe in human flourishing guided by reason.’
