In light of the escalating violence in the Middle East, we at Humanists UK express once again our profound sadness for the loss and suffering experienced in the region. We condemn all acts of terrorism and of state violence against civilians, regardless of their source. Our hope remains for an end to all violence and for a world where individuals of all backgrounds can coexist without fear of oppression.
This conflict profoundly affects not only those directly in the region but communities worldwide. More than that, the widespread and visible loss and suffering experienced by civilians in the region is a wound to all humanity. Across our world, many feel deeply hurt, afraid, and vulnerable, and we stand in support of them when they are the victims of incitement, hatred, and persecution.
As humanists, we are committed to promoting values that prioritise peace, human dignity, and compassion. We take to heart the wise maxim of humanist and peace campaigner Bertrand Russell: ‘Remember your humanity, and forget the rest.’
We recognise the complexities of conflicts such as this one and understand that events in this region elicit fierce condemnation and dehumanising rhetoric, sometimes even from people otherwise of goodwill. We urge everyone to employ understanding, dialogue, and empathy in their discussions to bridge the divides that exist. The past does not have to dictate the future. While we are all too aware of human beings’ capacity for cruelty, we also believe in our better natures. Care for each other is hardwired into who we are through our evolution and the experience of human survival, when it is given the opportunity to come out.
Every citizen of this world has an obligation to work to counter the spread of hatred, misunderstanding, and violence and to work for sustainable peace everywhere in which every individual can truly flourish, shape and build a happy life, and explore their full potential as human beings. In times of acute suffering, we acknowledge once again that words alone may seem to count for very little. But words can be the first step toward understanding, empathy, and a path to lasting peace. We support all those working for peace, justice, and a sustainable end to bloodshed. In the meantime, we send our love and condolences to everyone who is hurting now, along with our admiration, encouragement, and respect to all those who, in trying times, have found new strength within themselves, in the cauldron of such atrocious suffering.
