Message from Jubilee Debt Campaign, a campaign supported by the BHA as well as many faith groups and development charities:
‘Britain has armed some of the most brutal regimes of the last 40 years – from Saddam Hussein to Hosni Mubarak, General Suharto to the Argentinean military junta of the 1970s. All too often these arms sales are made by lending money, which leaves a mountain of debt to be paid by the people of these countries, long after the dictator has been toppled. Today, countries like Indonesia, Egypt and Argentina are repaying large debts, because of bad decisions made by British governments.
In opposition, the Liberal Democrats promised to clean up the Department for Dodgy Deals. But Liberal Democrat Business Minister Vince Cable has told us he has no intention of carrying out such an audit. Nick Clegg, the leader of the Lib Dems, wrote in April, “We should never be silent over human rights abuses to curry favour with those in power… [the UK is a] beacon for human rights and the rule of law.”’
