The Welsh Government’s proposals for introducing an opt-out organ donation system are to be welcomed, and such proposals should be introduced across the entire United Kingdom, the BHA has commented in response to a consultation held by the Welsh Government on organ donation.
The Welsh Government has proposed that the organ donation system in Wales should be changed so that the number of organs available for transplant increases. An opt-out system is being proposed to replace the opt-in system, and the new system would be supported by a public information campaign
Naomi Phillips, BHA Head of Public Affairs, commented on the consultation: ‘The BHA has for some time advocated the introduction of a ‘soft’ system of presumed consent for organ donation across the UK. This system, taken with an increase in public information, would likely increase the level of organ donation, saving the lives of many, and reduce the demand for organ-trafficking. At the same time, an opt-out system would enable the wishes of those who do not wish to donate their organs for transplantation on their death to be respected.
‘We applaud the Welsh Government for advocating this policy and taking steps for real reform, and we hope this encourages similar moves across the rest of the UK.’
The consultation is open until the 31 January 2012, and BHA members in Wales are strongly urged to lend their support to the Welsh Government’s proposals.
