The British Humanist Association (BHA) has today spoken out against the Pope’s renewed campaign against the use of condoms to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Naomi Phillips, BHA Public Affairs Officer, said, ‘It is astonishingly irresponsible for the Pope to suggest, again, that the distribution of condoms will aggravate the problems of HIV/AIDs in Africa and elsewhere. For too long the Vatican has been spreading deeply dangerous misinformation of this kind, preferring Catholics and non-Catholics alike to die from AIDS rather than offend a Catholic “moral” principle.’
Ms Phillips continued, ‘There is no doubt that the use of condoms remains the most effective way to prevent the spread of HIV through intercourse – authorities around the world must condemn and undermine every attempt by the Vatican to restrict the distribution of condoms or spread lies about their effectiveness.’
