Those cartoons – what’s all the fuss about?

Humanists, like others, are divided on the Danish cartoons depicting Mohammed that have angered Muslims around the world. Many believe absolutely in freedom of expression; most think that one should not insult or hurt others; few believe that non-believers should be restricted by the religious beliefs of others. In the case of the Danish cartoons, these beliefs appear to clash, and we are left with many difficult questions:

Do the cartoons incite hatred of Islam? And if they did, would that matter?
Do they incite hatred of or violence against Muslims?
Are they funny? Were they meant to be
